Rabbi resigns

Rabbi Carrie Benveniste quietly resigns her position.

Amidst the firestorm of recent controversy surrounding LMU’s Jewish community, coordinator of Jewish Student Services and Hillel Rabbi Carrie Benveniste has resigned from her position, effective last Friday.

Associate Vice President for Intercultural Services Marshall Sauceda confirmed Benveniste’s resignation, saying that she made her decision after considering the “best interest of everyone, particularly students.”

“We respect her decision, appreciate her service and wish her well,” Sauceda said.
Senior Vice President of Student Affairs Dr. Lane Bove echoed Sauceda. “I want to thank Rabbi Carrie for her services to the University and wish her well in her future professional journey,” she said.

E-mails sent by the Loyolan to Benveniste were not answered.

Students also heard about Benveniste’s resignation, answering with mixed reactions to the situation.

“I do feel sadness about her decision to resign, but after talking to her and really getting a sense of the toll that this job was taking on her home life, I definitely respect her decision,” said junior sociology major Alison Shaw, who is also working on a minor in Jewish Studies. “I think that only she can know what is right for her and her family.”

On women and church

On the Fence

Last weekend, I was fortunate enough to participate in “Women and Church, East and West: a Catholic-Orthodox Conversation,” a symposium sponsored by LMU’s Huffington Ecumenical Institute (HEI). The fairly straightforward name suggests two things: First, the conference was a conversation focused on the experience of women in the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Churches. Second, if you wanted to find theology nerds this weekend, you couldn’t go wrong by visiting Ahmanson 1000.

Sophomore rap artist takes first at Battle of the Bands

Event Commentary

This semester’s Battle of the Bands finished up on Tuesday night, and undeclared sophomore Johnny Versace Cavallero (aka Johnny C.) took home the first place prize.
As people entered the Living Room, shouting encouraging words to their performing friends, Campus Recreation set up the stage for the night’s acts. With small round tables scattered around the room and oldies like Elton John playing in the background, the atmosphere was very informal and comfortable.

Men’s basketball season not quite finished

The men’s basketball team’s turnaround season is not quite over, as the Lions have been invited to participate in a postseason tournament. According to a season ticket holder who received a call from the LMU ticket office yesterday, LMU will host a game on Wednesday. The opponent is yet to be determined.

The tournaments most likely to consider LMU would be the National Invitational Tournament (NIT), College Basketball Invitational (CBI) or the CollegeInsider.com Tournament (CIT). Tournaments cannot officially announce their participants until after the NCAA Tournament brackets are revealed. The NCAA announces this year’s bracket Sunday evening.

“I really, really hope we get to play somewhere,” said Head Coach Max Good after Sunday’s loss to Gonzaga. “We’d play any place. I think these kids have earned it, and they have some big wins over some big teams.”

The biggest wins on LMU’s resume include a win at Notre Dame, a win over USC, a win over Long Beach State and a home win over then No. 9 Gonzaga.
