The University sent out an email to students over the break that included a digital rendering of what the new freshman buildings will look like. The new housing will include over 600 beds to replace the current Huesman and Sullivan halls, adding 440 more beds than what is currently available. 320 of those beds will be for first-year students and almost 300 beds will be for sophomore, junior and senior students.
Architectural firm Steinberg Hart created the plans for the new East Quad housing which is projected to begin construction in May 2019, according to Steve Nygaard, director of student housing. Steinberg Hart’s portfolio includes designing student housing facilities for Stanford University, Whittier College and CSU Fullerton, according to the architect’s website. Kim Patten is leading the design team and contractor firm Bernards will be carrying out the construction.
The new housing will be completed in Fall 2020, ready for the class of 2024's freshmen.
In their LMU This Week press release, the University said that "over the last few years the demand for on campus housing has begun to exceed the current number of spaces available to our students," a problem that this project hopes to solve.
In the meantime, Nygaard said that they are "investigating a variety of mitigation strategies, including alternative study space for Doheny residents, a sound-reducing wall in the Doheny residence, potential off-site work and a construction schedule that takes into consideration the campus academic schedule" to cause the least amount of disruption to students in the academic year of 2019-2020, when the Huesman and Sullivan halls will be under construction.
LMU has also started the process for off-campus housing for rising juniors and seniors looking for housing through LMU. In an email about off-campus housing, Student Housing stated that off-campus applications are now open until Jan. 21 and will be adding two new off-campus options in addition to the LMU at Playa Del Oro apartments.
"LMU is developing plans to house as many students as possible in a variety of current and new temporary spaces during construction of the new residence halls," Nygaard said.
For the 2019-2020 academic year only, LMU is also offering housing in five houses adjacent to the University.
