Human rights month

December is National Human Rights month, yet the observation often gets buried under the chaos of the holiday season. Make an effort this month to stay up-to-date on the different human rights complications around the world. Check your knowledge of human rights with the following quiz:

Human rights are universally agreed upon. True or false?

False. While there are international guidelines, not every country follows them or agrees. For example, the United States is currently debating over whether health care is a human right.

The United Nations (U.N.) asserts that prisoners should be granted the same human rights as free persons. True or false?

True. According to the U.N., everyone—no matter the circumstance—deserves the human rights laid out in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Human rights violations can be enforced on an international level. True or false?

True. When countries who have agreed to uphold human rights violate them, the U.N. can intervene—minimally—according to the U.N. However, the United States withdrew its agreement to uphold these rights in 2018, according to The New York Times. Therefore, they are immune to U.N. accountability.

Human rights violations are unfortunately not uncommon. No matter how well you did on the quiz, it is always important to stay informed about the different human rights violations happening around you.
